Calea Cake Bacolod

For desserts, we headed to another sidestreet along Lacson Avenue. Next on our Bacolod gastronomic tour was Calea’s sweet cakes.

We attempted to eat at Calea the previous year we visited Bacolod but was dissuaded because the place was packed full. This time, the place was still jampacked but we were really determined to taste the cakes they offer. So, we braved the crowds and found us a seat at the back part of the restaurant.

Calea was not that large and it was pretty cramped inside. The crowd was on the younger side; students and yuppies mostly. The café buzzed with lively conversations.

We were still a bit full from our lunch at Sweet Greens Deli Cafe so we decided to just share a piece of cake.

It was a bit confusing with all the activities going on if we’re gonna go straight up the counter or if the staff would come up to us and ask for our orders. But since no one seemed to be approaching us, we went ahead and ordered from the counter (we’re still unsure if that’s the way to order since we saw some being approached at their tables).

We asked for their bestseller, which according to the friendly staff that served us was their Chocolate Cake (Php80.00).

This was the bestest smoothest chocolate cake I’ve ever tasted; the flavor was full yet subtle, its sweetness mixing with a tinge of dark chocolate flavor. I noticed that it was also quite heavy on the tummy as we were quite full even with just a shared slice. The serving was larger than those being sold at Starbucks Bacolod (and much more affordable too).

THE AL FRESCO AREA AT THE NEW CALEA

Okay, so after almost six years of being away, I finally revisited Calea, Bacolod City’s queen of cakes and everything sweet. The cake boss has finally moved from her small joint at the side of L Fisher Hotel and relocated to, not that far, in front of the hotel. The new branch is bigger, a lot airier and has an al fresco dining area. Yes, it can seat a more than a single gang of cake lovers. Besides this one, they have also opened another branch right inside Robinson’s Place Bacolod. They’re certainly moving up.

I LOVE THIS PART OF CALEA

Calea’s interiors is almost similar to its former self, light blue walls accented with white brick columns. The ceiling, the same hue as its walls, sports dainty random circular prints with the main hall having drop-down lamps. I love the nook on the inner part of the restaurant, decorated with framed cake prints and actual plates; it has a cozier ambience than the rest of the eating area.

SO MANY CAKES TO CHOOSE FROM!

Due to time constraints, I wasn’t really able to eat inside Calea this time, but we ordered three of their best sellers for take out, to be eaten at, errr, across the street at L Fisher Hotel. Their chocolate cake, cheese cake and carrot cake soon filled our room’s small table. And as before, everything tasted absolutely delicious, with the cheese cake, edging the two out by a small margin.
